When Should Your Child Go to the Dentist for the First Time?

Jan 12, 2022

When you have a child, you have many important decisions, like when they should do something for the first time. There are many firsts, like trying new foods, learning to walk, and going to the dentist. Many people think they do not need to take their child to the dentist until they have a complete set of teeth, but that is not the case.

First Dentist Visit

As soon as you see that first tooth pop out, you should make an appointment for your child with the dentist. If your child reaches their first birthday and still does not have any teeth, take them to the dentist. According to the CDC, about 20%, or one in five, children ages 5 to 11 have a minimum of one untreated decaying tooth. If you notice anything strange, like white spots or bleeding, you should take them to the dentist immediately.

Why So Early?

Taking them at such a young age to the dentist allows a professional to catch a problem in its early stages and treat it effectively. This can start your child up with healthy oral hygiene practices and regular visits to the dentist. It can also make the dentist's office less scary if they become used to going so young. When you take your child to the dentist at a young age allows you to track and monitor any conditions as your child grows.

Selecting the Right Dentist

You can take your child to your own dentist or select a pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist specializes in the mouths of babies and children. They also understand that the dentist can be scary and make it more fun. A pediatric dentist has equipment especially sized for children. The exam and waiting rooms are designed with children in mind with bright colors, games, and typically a fish tank. A pediatric dentist works hard and makes sure your child has healthy teeth but also a positive experience when visiting the dentist.

Dental appointments do not have to be scary for children, but it is necessary. It would be best if you took your children to the dentist at a young age to give them a solid oral health foundation and make sure they have no mouth problems.
